Thank you for your kindness. I will go ahead and say here is what is expected for the next version, Basis 0.94.
- New web site
- We begin selling licensing. Very simple, and not expensive. (This is the only way we can afford to continue working on Basis)
- All text supporting localization (currently the system is in place but not all of Basis uses it). We will need translators!
- Plugin for Unity
- Plugin for PSM (Playstation mobile development…)
- Major improvements and additions to micro timelines
- Sprite Export (image sequence)

We have not had much time lately to work on Basis, but we should be able to spend more time on it now as my family and I have finished moving to a new community.

If you have any suggestions, questions, (or contributions!) please contact at moc.liamg|tcatnocsisab#moc.liamg|tcatnocsisab. We will have a new contact once the new website is announced.

Congratulation for your software.
Simple and effective. Do you plan soon export to image sequence?

by Hato (guest), 24 Mar 2014 14:45

Yes for now it is under CC Unlicense. In the future (as we are working on some new things) it will change slightly to protect out interests, legally, but the same general idea will remain: Code can be used for commercial purposes, no attribution necessary, you can derive code and release it freely, etc.

We would ask, though you are under absolutely no obligation, that we could work out terms for including your implementation in the SDK in the future, once the new version + website are ready. Would you mind shooting us a little email to "basiscontact" at google's mailing service, even if your answer is "no"? Thank you :) Also, please let us know if we can be of any help or if you have any questions.

Hello, I'm posting about finding what the exact License for the code is as I am planning to use Basis for a game for it I'm going to need to recode it to work with Javascript/Canvas/CraftyJS and I would like to publish the code to be freely used and modified on github however I don't know if you support the publishing of derived code as I can't find it's license stated. Is it under the Unlicense like the code under your Programming page?

Cool! Thank you, Scott! Waiting for the next release! Good luck!

Hi Nikolay!
When you drag a new skin over to the workspace, you can hold Shift while dragging to replace a skin that is already there.

- There is a potential visual bug that only affects the preview before replacing the skin - once replaced it is oriented correctly.
- There is another visual mismatch if you let go of shift - make sure you keep shift pressed down to replace.

These will be fixed in the next release.

Hi! Can I ask for help or tutorial? In the sample file "squirrel" is the eyelids animation. Please tell me how to make a change sprites in that example?
Regards, Nikolay

Thanks! We have decided to resume work on Basis.

Your thoughts and suggestions as well as what you like and what works for you are all welcome. :)

I just discovered your project, and it seems pretty neat.

Wow. I don't even know what to say! Thank you for the kind words and encouragement!

To be honest, we had basically stopped working on Basis. To keep it free, we tried a kickstarter, but couldn't get anybody interested in it. After the lack of funding, and more importantly, lack of interest from (most) others, it was hard to justify working on this beyond our own needs. There has been a little bit of support here and there… but not much.

Frankly I'm surprised people are still trickling onto this web site each day, and it was by chance I checked this forum.

However, to answer your question, one of the last things we did (though it is never uploaded to the web site) was work on a plugin for MonoGame. This is good for you because it is in C#, which makes it very close to be usable in Unity. If it is okay with you, could you email me at basiscontact (it is at I am willing to get something working in Unity, and I wonder what you mean by "and I can contribute to this". As for Basis, I think we will need more support and interest to continue with it, but we can talk about that more privately.

Thank you again for your kindness.
Cheers, Scott

Your BASIS is a miracle ! I 've been looking for a handy tool for 2d skeletal animation. Spine, Spriter, good , but skeletal animation is incredible in basis . Probably the best in the world. Please tell me? you plan to do a plugin for Unity3d? Because 2d in Unity is terrible! Tools that are now, they are uncomfortable. Moreover, 80 % of the games on this Unity, is 2d. And your BASIS could become an industry standard for Unity , but need a plugin , and want to add some additional functionality . But I already love BASIS . It is simple, it is comfortable, it is very powerful . I would like something he would have developed and became popular ( and I can contribute to this ) . Please. develop it !
Regards, Nikolay

PNG preview in windows explorer is complete garbage even though the library itself reads them fine. The header flags in the zlib stream (not deflate stream!) are wrong! Lib is indicating a window size of 256, when it should be 32k!

LilIoPngWrite only writes 1 correct (large!) chunk. It is all wrong.

- Should not use STL in code. One example scenario:
Using MSVC, have a project set up that uses precompiled headers. Precompiled headers include STL stuff, and define _SECURE_SCL in some way or another. Also, project includes LIL files or statically links a LIL library, but _SECURE_STL doesn't match. Linker links some code to STL as if _SECURE_SCL is one way, and also links other code as if it is the other way. These 2 ways get mixed up in a single process. Explosion. Days debugging with no clue what the problem is.
Lesson to take home from this? Don't use STL in library code unless it is ONLY dynamically linked. Urgh.

- In deflate encoding, maxLen should be recalculated in case it is already == bits.
- Somewhere in the encoding when a bestMatch is found, there is a nasty little memory leak or something that eventually accumulates…

Also too much stack space reserved in ZLib stuff… in some situations it fails badly

When loading a bmp file, if the code guesses a palette size LARGER than the bpp would allow, it still loads it all as a palette. Shouldn't it truncate?
